Classes in Securly MDM represent a group of devices that can be managed together in Teacher Tools or used for restriction profile assignments. Some content types, such as apps, books, files, and web links can be assigned to classes.
Devices can belong to multiple classes, unlike device groups, which can only belong to one. Note that it’s the devices that belong to a class, not users. However, if users are assigned to devices, they will be visible when adding or editing a class.
A class can represent a group of devices or a group of students logged into iPads that are in shared iPad Mode (introduced in iOS 9.3).
Another use for classes is to create a sort of "sub-group" of devices for the purpose of assigning specific apps. For example, you might create a "Special Ed" class and add the devices of the students who need a specific app. Even though the students don't meet together as a "class" during the same period, the class structure provides a place for you to assign the app to be installed.
Classes are secondary to Device Groups. That is, all devices still belong to a Device Group even once they are added to classes. A typical scenario though might be to have one device group for each grade, but then individual classes as needed.
Teachers can control a class from Teacher Tools performing functions like freezing screens, or applying screen layouts. By putting devices together in a class, the teacher can select them for management.
Classes from Apple School Manager will automatically appear in Teacher Tools and do not need to be imported or created manually.
