Using the Policy Editor Interface

In the sidebar to the left, you will see a Global settings section, as well as settings for each individual policy in your school or district, which are defined in Securly Filter. You will see several settings with toggle switches under each section. You can enable or disable these as needed.

Global settings

Enable AI Chat: When on, this allows AI Chat to be enabled for the school. When off, nobody in the school will be able to use AI Chat.

SIS Role and Grade Level Information: Enables sharing some simple non-PII data to the AI to improve responses. This is currently only grade level and role (teacher, student, etc...). Student grade levels will be used to adjust the complexity of the language and answers to be grade-appropriate. This requires that the school be onboarded in Securly Sync.

Securly Aware integration, suicide ideation detection and prevention: Enables conversations to be shared with the Aware engine to identify possible suicidal ideation and intervene with students in crisis.

Enhanced Privacy: When on, chat prompts/transcripts for admins and teachers will be disabled.

Teacher Access: Enables teachers to access chat prompts/transcripts for their students. Student information is obtained from SIS enrollments when teacher logs in and is cached for 24 hours. This requires Securly Sync integration.

Chrome Extension Integration: Enabling the Chrome extension allows Securly to filter and monitor third-party AI chat platforms. This gives administrators and teachers visibility into student usage, including chat interactions and conversation transcripts across supported AI tools.

Currently supported platforms include:

  • ChatGPT
  • Gemini
  • Google Docs (Gemini)
  • MagicSchool
  • SchoolAI
  • Microsoft Copilot
  • NotebookLM
  • Brisk
Note

Your AI Chat policies or Securly Filter policies will continue to be enforced across the above platforms. While Securly cannot currently control third-party AI responses, the system does regulate what users are allowed to ask by blocking restricted or inappropriate prompts as per the policy.

AI Engine: This setting lets you select an AI engine for the conversations, including OpenAI and Google Gemini. Securly Chat currently defaults to OpenAI (GPT-5.1) if default is selected.

Per-policy settings

Enable AI Chat: When on, this enables AI Chat for the selected policy. When off, users in this policy will not be able to use AI Chat.

Mental Wellness Content: When on, the AI will use a library of clinical rooted content, created by psychologists that help ground it in age appropriate approaches to common problems..

Sexual Content: When on, the AI will provide help on topics such as contraception, abortion, STIs, pregnancy, human sexual orientation and LGBT issues.

Firearms, Hunting, and Self-Defense: When on, the AI will discuss topics related to firearms and hunting. The AI will never discuss violence-related content regardless of this setting.

Drugs: When on, the AI will discuss matters related to prescription and recreational drugs

Gambling: When on, the AI will discuss gambling and sports betting.

Games: When on, the AI will discuss games and gaming.

Hate: When on, the AI will discuss hate groups and hate ideologies from an academic perspective suitable for historical research.

School Work: If off, the AI will not do things that sound like school work. This includes writing essays, book reports, and summaries. It will use the Socratic method for math questions, and ask leading questions instead of solving equations. If on, it will be as helpful as possible.

Note

The School Work setting is designed to prevent students from using the AI to do things that sound like school work. However, as "school work" is a broad category, there will be instances where students can work around this setting by asking the AI to approach work differently. If you suspect a student is engaging in AI misuse, you can check their history in the History menu, or you can add instructions under Custom Policies.

Custom Policies: In this text box, you can add your own custom prompts that will apply to this policy.

Adjusting Policy Settings

Enabling/Disabling Topics: Toggle the switch next to each topic to 'On' or 'Off' to enable or disable the AI's engagement with that content.

Click the Save button in the lower right to save your changes. Changes to policy settings take effect when a new chat is started.
