Article summary

There are several methods available for enrolling devices into Securly MDM. The recommended method is using Automated Device Enrollment (formerly Device Enrollment Program, or DEP) through Apple School Manager. Unlike some other enrollment methods, those done through Automated Device Enrollment cannot be removed by the device user (i.e. student).

With Automated Device Enrollment, devices will enroll into Securly MDM automatically during the initial device setup on a new, or factory reset device. Be sure you have completed the steps in the Setting Up Automated Device Enrollment section of this guide. If you plan to enroll devices into shared iPad mode, be sure to configure the necessary settings for the device group prior to enrollment.

  1. Check the Devices tab in Settings > Device Enrollment to verify that your devices are listed. This list is pulled from your ASM account and verifies that the devices are assigned in ASM to the Securly MDM server.

  2. Power on the iPad to begin the setup process. If the device has previously been set up, you can perform a factory reset either from your previous MDM or from the iPad (if not disabled by your previous MDM) from Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.

  3. The setup process will begin on the device. Setup Assistant panes will be skipped unless they were selected when configuring Automated Device Enrollment in Securly MDM. The only necessary step is to connect the device to Wi-Fi. Even this step can be skipped if you have prepared your devices using Apple Configurator (not covered in this guide) and included the option to push the Wi-Fi profile to the device during preparation, thus making the entire enrollment process zero-touch.

  4. Once the device connects to Wi-Fi, it will automatically contact ASM to check to see if it should enroll into an MDM then download the enrollment profile. During the process you should see notifications on the device similar to:

[Your District/Organization Name] will automatically configure your iPad.

    followed by

Installing Configuration from [Your District/Organization Name]

If you do not see these notifications, and instead see all the normal Setup Assistant questions, it means that the device did not receive the enrollment profile from ASM. If the device assignment was recently made, you may need to wait a bit longer before enrolling.

  5. At this point, the Securly MDM profile will be installed and any profile restrictions you have configured in the Restrictions Profiles and assigned to the device group into which you are enrolling devices will be applied. See the Restriction Profiles section of this guide for more information.

  6. The Securly MDM Locker app will automatically install on the device within a few minutes, provided the steps in the Add Securly Locker to your ASM Location section of this guide were completed.
